Mt Richmond, a dog friendly hike. Kiwi and I recently embarked on this stunning hike just a couple of hours drive from Nelson, near Renwick. For those with a 4WD and a bit of clearance, you can drive all the way to the top of the road,

cutting down your walking time significantly.

While the DOC website suggests a 6-hour trek from the Top Valley Road, I assume this is for those who can’t drive to the top of the road. Starting from the top of the road only took us 3.5 hours to reach the hut.

Getting there

The journey from the car

park to the hut is a delightful experience, with gentle inclines and a few small steep sections that most hikers, including your adventurous pup, can handle with ease, we even had a sausage dog up if the hut with us. Starting at 500m of elevation, you’ll ascend to the hut at 1200m, offering a rewarding 700m elevation gain. Along the way, your dog can enjoy a refreshing drink from a small stream near the hut and

explore a variety of intriguing scents.

loving hikers and their canine companions, making

it a perfect spot for a social gathering. Set up your

tent and prepare for a chilly night, even in summer,

by packing plenty of warm gear for both you

and your pup.

The summit

For an epic start to the day, we woke up at 4:30 am and head to the summit of Mt Richmond to witness a breathtaking sunrise. This section of the trail is a lot more technical and rocky, so it’s best suited for experienced hikers, there is no clear trail and it can be easy to get lost in the early hours of the morning. If you’re up for the challenge, pack a bag with warm clothes and all the essentials for you and your dog. I took a sleeping bag, a foam bed roll, and even a kettle for a hot drink at the summit. Walking poles are highly recommended due to the steep and rocky

terrain. I took a couple of tumbles on the way down !

At the summit, expect strong winds, but a rock shelter provides some respite. Despite the January warmth, it can be quite cold up there, so be prepared. Sharing this awe-inspiring moment with your best mate is an incredibly rewarding experience, making it a truly special adventure.

10/10 would recommend this hike for you and your pooch.
